25 Years of Theatre MITP

The Old University Theatre in St Christopher Street, Valletta, was renamed as the theatre of the 'MITP' (Mediterranean Institute Theatre Programme) in 1990, after it was refurbished into the black box space we know today. It was the venue of what has since developed into the Department of Theatre Studies within the School of Performing Arts (SPA) at the University of Malta.

For many years, the theatre was run by the Koperattiva Kulturali Universitarja, until SPA was founded in 2012 and took over the running of the space. Fast forward to 2015, twenty-five years after its opening. The theatre will close its doors on 1 June for a long overdue refurbishment. Major works are planned for the upgrading of the theatre's facilities, in line with the vision to transform it into a versatile, performing arts space that is up to C21 (twenty-first-century) standards. This calls for a celebration.

To mark the 25 years of the MITP venue as we know it, the Department of Theatre Studies is organising a reception at the theatre. The MITP has been synonymous with innovative performance work by Maltese and international artists over the course of a quarter of a century. The upcoming refurbishment will ensure that it will continue to serve its function in a changing world.
