Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny

Showing exclusively at the Eden Cinemas on Wednesday 1st April at 8:15pm is the Royal Opera’s first staging of ‘Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny’, directed by John Fulljames. Broadcast live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the opera is a major work from the remarkable partnership of playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill.

Sung in English and conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, this extraordinary production is known to be one of the most unsettling and provocative of all operas. Mahagonny is a satire on money, mortality and pleasure-seeking among the dubious citizens of a fictional city. The richly varied, jazz infused score, influenced by ragtime music, includes irresistible melodies and dramatic ensembles.

The superb cast includes Kurt Streit as Jimmy; the wild lumberjack, Christine Rice as his sweetheart Jenny, and Anne Sofie von Otter in a welcome return to The Royal Opera as the cunning Leokadja Begbick. Also part of this incredible cast is Peter Hoare and Willard W. White as helpers and fellow-fugitives Fatty and Moses.

Enhancing this unique experience is the amplified sound, together with dimmed lighting in Eden Cinemas’ multipurpose theatre. This provides a sense of authenticity, as though watching the production from the Royal Opera House. Tickets for Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny are priced at €23 per adult and a mere €10 for children aged 16 and under. A complimentary glass of wine will also be offered, together with complimentary parking and a 25% discount at Waterbiscuit upon presentation of a ticket.
