400th Anniversary of the Wignacourt Aqueduct

400th Anniversary of the Wignacourt Aqueduct in Malta, Special Events Malta, 21.04.2015 - 21.04.2015

Description:

HSBC will be commemorating the installation of a water channel that was some 16 kilometres long.

This project was planned and largely financed by the Grand Master Alof De Wignacourt and was ultimately functioning in April of 1615.

On Tuesday, April 21, the HSBC will  be organising a commemorative event in the way of a modern style re-enactment in Pjazza San Ġorġ.  The event shall start at 9.30 at City Gate with the participation of hundreds of school children.  These will symbolically carry water in jugs to represent the channelling of water from Rabat to Valletta.

Once in Pjazza San Ġorġ, the children will be able to assist to a ceremonial inauguration of the Aqueduct. Some 30 re-enactors each in their particular role will be evoking that which took place 400 years ago in the same square.

The event shall contain, military pageantry, folkloristic dancing, traditional races on foot and other colourful events.

All are invited to attend this spectacle. Admission into Pjazza San Ġorġ is free.
