Learning a language in a day through films. Have you ever learnt a language in a day? What if the planets future depended on it? In the film Arrival Linguistics Professor Louise Banks is recruited by the U.S army to do just that. CineXjenza uses the medium of film to inspire discussions on science. Arrival will be screened, in collaboration with the student organisation ALLT, at 7pm on the 11th of February 2020 at Spazju Kreattiv.
Based on the short story (1998) by Ted Chiang called “Story of Your Life”. In the novel, when 12 massive spaceships land around the world, nations face a global war, and must find a way to communicate with the aliens imminently, risking Louise Banks’ life and possibly all of humanity. After the movie there will be a discussion with Dr Claudia Borg, a lecturer at the University of Malta, who will also be attending the discussion, is a researcher in Artificial Intelligence with a special interest in natural language processing and computational linguistics. Snacks and refreshments will be served during the discussion.
CineXjenza is supported by the STEAM project. It is run by the Malta Chamber of Scientists and S-Cubed, in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv.
