Fidelio: Live from Teatro alla Scala in Milan

Showing exclusively at the Eden Cinemas on Sunday 7th December at 17:30 is Fidelio, broadcast live from Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Fidelio, Beethoven’s one and only opera, is inspired by the French Revolution and is considered a timeless tribute to love, life and liberty, as well as a celebration of human rights and the freedom of speech.

Directed by Deborah Warner, the greatness of Beethoven’s opera comes from his brilliant musical score as well as the admirability of the idealised central character Leonore, who disguises herself as a young man in order to rescue her husband from political incarceration.

The opera’s ongoing theme of triumph of the human spirit over oppression continues to establish Fidelio as one the world’s greatest classical repertoires. The story takes place in Spain at the end of the 18th Century within a state prison outside Seville.

The nobleman Florestan spends many years secretly and unjustly locked away for having spoken out bravely against the wicked tyrant Pizarro. Leonore, Florestan’s loving and courageous wife, is determined to free her husband and so disguises herself as a boy named Fidelio. She then gets a job as an assistant to the old jail keeper, Rocco. By working in the prisons, she plans to find the secret dungeon where Florestan is being kept in order to help him escape.

Conductor Daniel Barenboim has spent a lifetime examining Beethoven’s every note. With that said, there is no doubt that audiences are in for some thrilling and touching surprises. Making the evening a unique experience, the Eden Cinemas make use of enhanced sound together with dimmed lighting within its multipurpose theatre. Such features provide a sense of authenticity, as though watching the production inside the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Sure to be a marvellous evening, the audience pays just a fraction of that charged overseas for theatre tickets.

Tickets for Fidelio are priced at €23 and a mere €10 for children aged 16 and under.
