A Spring Symphony - Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
Description:
Michael Laus directs the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra in a night showcasing works by Brahms, Webern and Schumann, with Italian pianist Pietro De Maria joining the orchestra for Brahms’ First Piano Concerto.
Schumann initially composed exclusively for the piano, but wrote his first symphony on the encouragement of his wife Clara, a few months after their marriage, and claimed it was inspired by his “spring of love.”
The Schumanns encouraged Brahms as he set out to establish himself as a musician, and his First Piano Concerto was the first orchestral work of his to receive acclaim from the public, in spite of a cold reception in its first two performances.
Webern’s orchestration of Bach’s Ricercar is notable for its Klangfarbenmelodie technique, through which musical lines are split between instruments to add colour and texture.
Programme:
Johannes Brahms – Piano Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 14
Johann Sebastian Bach/Anton Webern – Ricercar a 6 from The Musical Offering, BWV1079
Robert Schumann – Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major “Spring,” Op. 38
Conductor: Michael Laus
Piano: Pietro De Maria
