Il Classicismo

Description:
A series of lectures about Italian art by Fr. Marius Zerafa. Classicism in the arts is a cultural attitude which consists of assigning an exemplary value to the artistic models of classical antiquity. It suggests the tendency to a universal and unchangeable concept of the ideal beauty.
This concept is expressed through the qualities of order, harmony, balance and the proportion of some works, which subsequently are given a normative and exemplary role. From this point of view, classicism is present practically all the time and in all cultures, in parallel to the universal idea of art that is devoid of any models, rules and preconceived definitions of beauty. Sometimes it is possible that the supporters who vouch for an artistic model more than another try to coincide the dichotomy between classicism and anticlassicism with the artistic “beautiful” and “ugly”.
Classicism in the very strict sense was born in the humanistic environment of the 15th century, prevailed during the Italian Renaissance and spread during the 17th century in Europe. And it is about this artistic movement that Fr. Marius Zerafa will talk about during this evening.
